Egypt’s best known, and most visited attractions are the ancient pyramids which give us some inkling of what it was like to live among its kings and pharaohs. There are three pyramids in all, the biggest being the Pyramid of Khufu (or Cheops) which stands at 756 feet and is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The other two are the Pyramids of Khafre (or Chephren) and Menkaure (or Mycerinus) which is a lot smaller than the first two. All were built as burial chambers.
Just before the pyramids is the Sphinx, a feline beast sculpted from one piece of stone, and just as impressive as the pyramids. There are a number of sphinxes built around Egypt, but this is the biggest.
The pyramids are very conveniently located just beside Egypt’s capital Cairo. This city, with a population of approximately 17 million people, is Africa’s largest. It grows bigger every day as thousands of more commuters travel from the Nile delta and valley. Wide modern streets ensure it doesn’t feel like there are that many people filling the city every day.
One activity which Egypt is getting more renowned for every year is diving. The Red Sea has some of the world’s best sites as well as some excellent beaches to relax on. Sinai, in the north-east of the country is also rich in scenery and full of good areas for diving.
